1 Day ACUVUE Moist MULTIFOCAL Is Excellent
Bravo ACUVUE, for making the 1 Day ACUVUE Moist MULTIFOCAL. My patients are having a great deal of success with these new contact lenses. Until now, the eye doctor community has been hoping for a better multifocal contact lens. While most patients succeed with multifocal lenses, there was still a bothersome percentage of patients who could not obtain the results they wanted, especially with close-range vision. But last year, when the FDA approved the 1 Day ACUVUE Moist MULTIFOCAL contact lenses, that began to change.
Multifocal lenses are the contact lens version of bifocals. People start needing bifocals in their early 40’s. Everyone’s eyes go through a natural change, which makes it harder to see items when they are up close. We call it presbyopia. Bifocal glasses and multifocal contact lenses compensate to help people see near again. While few patients have trouble adjusting to bifocal glasses, a lot of presbyopia contact lens wearers end up back at their eye doctors’ offices frustrated with the results. Previous presbyopia lenses provided excellent correction for distance vision. But, patients reported that their close-range eyesight—the vision the contact lenses were supposed to specialize in fixing—was not clear.
Vistakon, the manufacturer of the 1 Day ACUVUE Moist MULTIFOCAL lenses, worked closely with eye doctors and research and design engineers to innovate and resolve this problem for a lot of contact lens wearers. They zeroed in on one particular fact: Pupil sizes vary significantly between individuals. Then Vistakon created a lens that worked for large pupils, small pupils, and all the sizes in between.
After about nine months of prescribing these lenses, many of my patients are very pleased with their results. Their close-up vision is clear—the hallmark of a multifocal contact lens. I’m hearing about a lot of success stories from other doctors in our eye practice. I also witnessed some encouraging compliments and clinical results about the new ACUVUE multifocal at recent optometrist conferences I’ve attended.
Just this week, Bausch + Lomb released the new ULTRA® Contact Lenses for Presbyopia. This contact lens also has the potential to be an excellent multifocal contact lens. So, I’m excited about the options for people with presbyopia. It’s a bright future—both close up and far away.
