1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye Made Of Beneficial HYDRACLEAR
1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye contact lenses let plenty of oxygen reach your eyes, and they maintain ample moisture for comfort. The brand and term HYDRACLEAR refers to the material science that makes all of this oxygen and moisture possible.
HYDRACLEAR is a contact lens material that combines silicone hydrogel with a wetting agent. The wetting agent is a supplement to your tears, helping to keep your eyes wet and comfortable. A decade ago, many soft contact lenses were made of plain hydrogel, which is a type of plastic. Hydrogel allowed some oxygen to pass through contact lenses and reach the eyes, but not enough. So the engineers who design contact lenses added silicone to the mix, and the new and improved silicone hydrogels were born. These improved lenses allowed four or five times the amount of oxygen to pass through contact lenses to the eyes. Eye doctors started recommending silicone hydrogel contacts because they contributed to improved eye health. Patients loved their healthier eyes, as well as the additional comfort they experienced. Now, about 70 percent of the contact lenses prescribed are made of silicone hydrogel.
1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye, The Silicone Hydrogel Upgrade
ACUVUE further improved silicone hydrogel by combining the material with a wetting agent that better mimicked your tears. They named this improved substance HYDRACLEAR; and then they used it to manufacture the popular 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye contact lenses. These lenses proved healthy enough for the FDA to approve them as the first silicone hydrogel lenses made for daily disposal.
With an oxygen transmissibility score* of approximately 118, I really like prescribing 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye lenses. Patients’ corneas are getting almost 100 percent of the oxygen they can consume. For daily lenses, that is a healthy amount of oxygen. In addition, the HYDRACLEAR wetting agent provides that extra moisture the lens retains. I seldom hear patients complain about discomfort or the dry eyes phenomenon with these contacts.
More HYDRACLEAR Improvements
Now ACUVUE is making lenses with an improved version called HYDRACLEAR PLUS. The contact lens engineers figured out a way to increase the amount of moisture present in the silicone hydrogel. This short movie on the ACUVUE website explains it well:
The lenses that contain HYDRACLEAR PLUS, the ACUVUE Oasys, are often prescribed as extended wear for up to seven days before replacing the contact lenses. Their oxygen transmissibility score is about 147; and this extra oxygen makes them safer to wear these lenses nonstop for a few days.
Just within the last year, ACUVUE released it’s HydraMax silicone hydrogel in VITA brand of contact lenses. For extended wear patients who want to swap out their lenses monthly, the HydraMax-based lenses will let them observe that longer replacement period. But for daily disposable lenses, 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye is a great lens.
